Program Name: Prep Medico

School Affiliation: UC Davis School of Medicine

Description: Residential Program that includes:

  • Experience dormitory life on a college campus
  • Shadow physicians at UC Davis Medical Center and Kaiser Permanente
  • Medical Simulation labs
  • Explore Latino health disparities and social determinants of health
  • Discover health policy
  • Explore leadership skills
  • Premed mentoring

Requirements:

  • Up to date immunizations
  • Freshman and sophomores in California colleges
  • Applicant must be residing in Central valley or Northern California
  • Must have completed general chemistry OR general biology
  • Must have completed a college English course
  • Letters of Recommendation

Program Name: Pre-Health Undergraduate Program (PUP)

School Affiliation: UC San Francisco

Description: 4-week, non-residential clinical research training program that includes:

  • Paired up with a UCSF professional student mentor
  • Learn to evaluate medical literature and design clinical research studies
  • Lunchtime sessions with info focused on careers in clinical research
  • Costs of Tuition and textbooks will be provided
  • $1,500 Stipend will be provided

Requirements:

  • Must attend all classes at UCSF between July and August (2019 dates not out yet)
  • Must be a citizen or permanent resident
  • Be an underrepresented minority undergraduate student who is planning to attend medical, dental, nursing, pharmacy, or physical therapy school
  • 3rd and 4th year undergraduates only (must attend a 4 yr institution)
  • GPA of 3.5 and strong writing/math skills preferred
    • If GPA below 3.5 you may apply but must include a description of applicant’s strengths
  • 1 letter of recommendation (no more than 1 is allowed)

Program Name: Summer Undergraduate Research Training Program (SMART)

School Affiliation: Baylor College of Medicine

Description: Nine weeks (May 28-July 26 2019) of PAID ($5,500), biochemically related research, professional development, and GRE prep workshops. Designated housing near Baylor College of medicine (cost may be deducted from $5,500 payment; contact program for more info).

Requirements:

  • 3.0 GPA or higher
  • Must be a current college student in the U.S. (Must not have graduated during/before the program)
  • Personal Statement
  • Research Experience Statement (No previous research is required, EXCEPT for first year college students)
    • First year students will only be accepted if they have won a national/international science fair award
  • Career Objectives Statement
  • 2 letters of recommendation from faculty familiar with your ability in math/science/engineering

Program Name: Medical Education Development Program

School Affiliation: University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) School of Medicine

Description: Residential Summer Program that includes:

  • Stipend of $2400 provided to subsidize the cost of meals and transportation
  • Program covers housing on in-campus dormitory
  • Intensive curriculum that mimics the first semester of medical school
    • Biochem, anatomy, histology, microbiology, physiology
  • Enhances your studying and testing skills to prepare you for medical school
  • Cultural competence and health disparities Seminars
  • Professionalism Seminars

Requirements:

  • Reside on campus for the duration of 9-week program (May 27-July 27, 2019)
  • Premedical students or pre-dental students with one year remaining before applying to professional school (Seniors in college or postgraduates are okay)
  • Must be from disadvantaged background
    • Education, Economic, or from an underrepresented minority in health professions
  • Passing grade in Organic Chemistry Part 1 and other taken math/science classes to prove solid background that are preparatory for professional school
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.75
  • Personal statement
  • 2 letters of Recommendation (1 must be from science professor)
    • 3rd letter is optional
  • Note: program gives preference to North Carolina Residents, but every year ⅓ of acceptances are given to out of state applicants

Program Name:  Chicago Academic Medicine Program (CAMP)

School Affiliation: Pritzker School of Medicine

Description: Commuter program that includes:

  • $150 credit on Ventra card for transportation
  • Stipend of $2400 upon completion of program
  • Clinical shadowing
  • Premedical advising and mentoring
  • Interactive lectures
  • Group learning and team building projects

Requirements:

  • Participate 6 weeks from June 17-July 26, 2019
  • Program seeks students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds and/or represent groups that are known to be underrepresented in health sciences and medicine
  • Can apply following high school graduation, freshman or sophomore year of college
  • Prior participation or demonstrated interest in a pre-medical training/research program
  • Proof of health insurance
  • 2-3 letters of recommendation

Program Name: Student Clinical Opportunities for Premedical Experience (SCOPE)

School Affiliation: Stanford School of Medicine, Student Run Program

Description:

  • Volunteer at the Emergency Dept. of Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, CA
  • Work on a project team that complements your skills (interpreting, art, web, photography and more)

Requirements:

  • Must be over 18; do not need to be a current/recent college student
  • Volunteer 3 shifts per month (9 hr shifts, overnight and weekend shifts available)
  • Complete a minimum of 200 hours total
  • Choose a project team and meet every 2 weeks at Stanford (Usually Sunday evenings for 1 hr)
  • Interview component (if invited)
    • If you are applying for an interpreter position (Viet or Spanish), the interview will be in that specific language

Due Date: Accepts apps every Fall & Winter Quarter, upcoming EARLY due date January 29, 2019

Program Name: Summer Internship Program

School Affiliation: John Hopkins School of Medicine

Description: Residential Program that includes:

  • Provides research experience to students of diverse backgrounds and students with disabilities
    • Topics include pulmonary and critical care, nanotechnology for Biology, cell engineering and more!
  • Housing provided for duration of 10 week program
  • Learn laboratory research techniques
  • Minimum of $3000 stipend provided upon program completion
  • Conclude program with poster session

Requirements:

  • Reside on campus for duration of program May 26 – August 3, 2019
  • Must have completed 2 or more years of college
  • 2 letters of recommendation

Program Name: Vanderbilt Summer Science Academy

School Affiliation: Vanderbilt School of Medicine

Description: Residential and paid clinical research program that includes:

  • Complete a research project with a mentor
  • Observe clinical patient care will spending time with residents and attending physicians
  • Attend weekly seminars on topics including medical school admissions, medical student life, and issues related to healthcare
  • Housing provided and student will receive $1,500 stipend
    • Program does not cover meals or travel
    • Disadvantaged students may be eligible for financial assistance

Requirements:

  • Must live on campus for the duration of program (June 3 – August 2, 2019)
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident
  • Must be earning a 4 year undergraduate degree at a US college or university
  • Student must be a college undergrad during the summer of the program year
  • Must have a 3.5 GPA or higher
  • Preference is given to students with prior research experience and who have taken advanced science courses
  • Students must have a strong desire to pursue and MD degree or MD/PhD
  • Must present research during poster presentation at the end of the program
  • 2 letters of recommendation

Program Name: Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP)

School Affiliation: New York University School of Medicine

Description: Residential, Paid Program that includes:

  • Experience the life of a graduate student in Biomedical sciences

Program Name: Michigan Health Sciences Undergraduate Research Academy (MHSURA)

School Affiliation: University of Michigan Medical School

Description: Residential Program that includes:

  • Stipend, housing and meal plan provided
  • Choose between a research OR clinical fellowship experience
  • Match with a faculty mentor based on your career interests
  • Gain understanding of health disparities

Program Name: Summer Biomedical Sciences Institute

School Affiliation: Duke University School of Medicine

Description: Six week, paid residential summer program that includes:

  • Receive stipend of $600
  • Cost of housing and meals is covered by the program
    • Scholars will stay in the residence halls at Duke and will share a room with one other scholar
  • Academic component that prepares participants for success in prehealth science courses like O-chem, physics, physiology, writing in medical education, etc.
  • Advisement that provides a plan for success throughout undergraduate years
  • Workshops on financial wellness
  • Seminars on ethical issues and health disparities
  • Clinical experience through weekly observerships in intensive care units/inpatient Duke Health System facility and a standardized patient encounter
  • All scholars have an individual meeting with a member of the admissions committee
  • Teaching assistant live in the residence hall with students to enhance academic environment

Requirements:

  • Live on campus for duration of the program (June 8 – July 20, 2019)
  • Program targets students who are underrepresented in health professions or who are disadvantaged, or who desire to work in underserved communities
  • Must be a rising sophomore or junior in college
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or hold J-1 student visa
  • Have overall GPA of at least 2.5
  • Must have take one semester of general chemistry
  • Provide proof of insurance and vaccination

Program Name: Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)

School Affiliation: UC San Diego School of Medicine

Description: Residential, paid summer program that includes:

  • Weekly career development seminars
  • Physician-Scientist clinical shadowing experience
  • Research in biomedical science with help of faculty
  • Housing and $1600/month stipend provided
    • Housing includes room, but not board – inquire with the program for more info
  • $500 travel allowance for transportation to and from San Diego

Requirements:

  • Stay on campus for the duration of the program June 24- August 16, 2019
  • Must be U.S. Citizens or permanent residents
  • Must have completed one year of undergraduate studies at a university or be attending community/junior college and have completed 6 courses (at least 3 per term)
  • Students must fulfill at least ONE of the following criterias:
    • Individual from racial and ethnic groups that have been shown by NIH to be underrepresented in health related sciences on a national basis
    • Individual with disabilities
    • Individual from disadvantaged backgrounds (either educational or economic)
  • Letters of Recommendation
  • Present work at UCSD Summer Research Conference

Program Name: Summer Health Profession Education Program (SHPEP)

Description: Residential program that includes:

  • Clinical shadowing and simulation experiences
  • Enrichment courses in science
  • Curriculum designed to increase awareness of social determinants of health and disparities
  • Housing provided
  • Travel assistance from $300-$500 depending on site
  • $600 stipend provided in two installments through out the program
  • Meals provided

Requirements:

  • Live on campus for the duration of the program (6 weeks in June, July, or August depending on site)
  • Must provide proof of health insurance and up to date vaccinations
  • Current Freshman or Sophomore in College
  • Minimum overall 2.5 GPA
  • Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or have DACA status
  • Identify with a group that is racially/ethnically underrepresented in health professions, or comes from an economically/educationally disadvantaged backgrounds, or has demonstrated an interest in issues affecting underserved populations

Program Name: Stanford Summer Community College Premedical Program (SSCCPP)

School Affiliation: Stanford School of Medicine

Description: Six-week residential program that will immerse students in the Stanford School of Medicine network. Students will gain an introduction to the MCAT, the medical school admissions and financing process, science preparatory class, medical literature and leadership. Additionally, students will gain clinical shadowing experience and mentorship.

Requirements:

  • Reside on Campus for the 6 week duration of the Program (June 23-August 2019)
  • Demonstrate academic or economic barriers in pursuit of their postsecondary education
  • Be in good academic standing (2.0 or higher)
  • Be a current community college student

Program Name: UCLA Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Enrichment Program (UCLA PREP)

School Affiliation: UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine

Description: Commuter Program that includes:

  • Academic Preparation for the MCAT or DAT
  • Career Guidance and Personal development
  • Shadowing physicians, dentists and or medical researchers both in private settings and clinic settings
  • Meet recruiters form health professional schools around the country at a special event
  • Stipend for relocation during the program may be available depending on funds

Requirements:

  • Must come from an educationally or economically disadvantaged background
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen, permanent resident, or DACA holder
  • Minimum 2.5 science GPA for freshman and sophmores

Program Name: Leadership Education for Aspiring Physicians (LEAP)

School Affiliation: Stanford School of Medicine

Description: Non-residential program that includes:

  • Receive advising and project planning support for the successful implementation of a project that can positively impact a community of your choice
  • Gain mentorship and advice on the medical school preparation and application process
  • Develop skills that you can use throughout your career as a future leader

Requirements:

  • Attend monthly seminars & work sessions at Stanford School of Medicine (October – June)
    • Sessions held on Saturdays from 9am-1pm (1-2 Saturdays a month)
  • Plan a Capstone project by the end of program that focuses on health leadership, advocacy, or research
